Step Up for Clean Up Australia Day!
2nd March, 2021 | by materialshandlingWith Clean Up Australia Day just around the corner, there is no better time than to take the pledge and look after our environment.
Single-use disposable items, such as coffee cups, food packaging, masks and sanitised wipes, still pose a massive threat, polluting parks, bushland, streets and beaches.
Research shows that more than 1 in 3 (34%) Australian households self-identified as producing more packaging waste, compared to previous years. This derives from lockdown periods and restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. As such, more than 1 in 2 (55%) reported they are more concerned about product packaging and waste than they were in 2019.
Hosted on the first Sunday in March, Clean Up Australia Day inspires and empowers individuals, communities, and organisations to clean up, fix up and conserve the environment. Started 30 years ago, the initiative aims to make a difference and has since grown into the nation’s largest community-based environmental event.
Materials Handling takes part in the Business Clean Up Australia Day on Tuesday, 2 March.
Clean Up Australia Chairman, Pip Kiernan spoke about the event in 2021 and how it’s important for all Australians to take the pledge to Step Up and Clean Up, which is the events overarching mission.
“This year has seen disruption to our lives, not least of all to our local environments which have been impacted by increased uptake of single-use, disposable items,” said Ms Kiernan.
“We know Australians everywhere are itching to get involved… Indeed, it’s never been more important to get involved and make a real difference… By planning ahead and signing up to a Clean Up event, you are making a pledge to help conserve the environment for the long-term future and taking an important action by stepping up for your community.”
In response to the everchanging COVID-19 pandemic, additional conditions will be put in place to ensure the health and safety of all volunteers who take part in the event. This includes setting limits per event and Clean-Up kits with QR registration codes, hand sanitiser, gloves and plus bags for every participant.

That being said, we are reminded that Clean Up Australia Day isn’t just a one-day affair; with environmental action encouraged every day of the year.
“Stepping Up to Clean Up goes well beyond one day. It’s an ongoing commitment to protecting our environment and looking for ways to help live more sustainably 365 days a year,” said Ms Kiernan.
“Most recently, the 2025 National Packaging Targets set a clear path and open ambition for all Australians to choose a sustainable pathway for our future, which included targets for 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging, so the time to get involved is now – for both Clean Up Australia Day 2021 and well beyond.”
Clean Up Australia Day will be held on Sunday, 7 March 2021 with Business Clean Up Day’s on Tuesday, 2 March 2021 and Schools Clean Up Day on Friday, 5 March 2021.
For those wanting to join the initiative, Clean Up Australia events are happening across the nation and more information can be found via the Clean Up website. Alternatively, consider donating to the cause, which will go straight to educational resources and clean up materials.
Other ways community members can get involved is by shopping their ‘Buy Recycled Collections’, which showcases products and packaging made from recycled content, extending the life of resources, and reducing the need to extract new ones from our precious planet.

Tipping Bins Crane Lifting Bulk Waste
3rd March, 2017 | by excitemediaThe MBWB range of Bulk Waste Crane Bins is designed to transport, remove and dispose of waste from building and mining sites. They feature the ability to carry large capacities up to 14 tonnes (Working Load Limit) and are extremely heavy-duty. Crane Bin Tippers are specifically built to handle bulk waste, like sand, gravel, excavation waste and scrap metal.
Known as a heavy load crane bin, these large containers are used with overhead cranes. When tipping to empty contents, the pivoting yoke locks flatly into place at the rear of the bin. When lifted, the bin hangs vertically and can empty its contents. To reset, lower the bin onto the ground and release the catch.
Our Bulk Waste Crane Bins are available in three different sizes with various maximum load capacities.

Concrete Washout Filtration Unit

This system effectively controls and handles concrete wash water onsite to minimise the risk of pollution and hazardous materials. It allows concrete trucks to wash directly into the filtration bag and contain waste and excess materials.
With a Filtration Bag made from 300gsm geotextile fabric, this system collects sand, gravel and concrete particles as fine as 80 microns. Excess water drains through the bag and is captured in the holding tank below. From here, the water can be tested and treated, making it a great de-watering station.
Fitted with fork guides and crane lugs, the Filtration Unit can be easily located around a job site. It’s ideal for concrete slurry from trucks and equipment washout, concrete cutting, coring and grinding. As mentioned, it can be additionally used for pumping and filtering sediment from silt-laden water.

Storage Racks Rigging Equipment

It hangs chains, slings, shackles, hooks and clamps, and keeps equipment nicely organised. The rack is designed to prevent damage or loss to any lifting equipment. With 14 hooks, items can be protected against hazards that may compromise their quality.
Constructed with an ‘A’ frame build for additional stability, the Rigging Storage Rack neatly arranged. The base is solid and keeps equipment off the floor, which prevents further damage. It also has fork pockets and crane lugs, which allows the unit to be transported around a workplace. Its total Working Load Limit (WLL) is a staggering 1000 kg.

2014 IHHC National Conference

Safety is always of paramount importance in a work space. When it comes to a loading dock, safety is all the more necessary.There is always a lot of activity on a loading dock. With arrivals coming in and shipments going out, even the most well-managed and organised workplace needs to keep a firm eye on safety at all times to ensure risks are minimised and mitigated.

Loading Dock Factors
Due to the fact there are often so many moving parts to a successfully working loading dock, there are also an equal amount of factors that need to be accounted for and controlled to ensure safety.-

Being able to stay on top of these different factors will enable you to minimise the likelihood of an accident and thus injury and/or asset damage.
Standard operating procedure
The standard operating procedure refers to the laid out policies and protocols to ensure work is done in a safe and responsible manner. This can include inspecting incoming and outgoing loads, proper disposal of material and correct use of locking devices. Every procedure will be unique to the workspace in question and should be constantly reviewed and updated.
Cleaning and other housekeeping
Keeping your loading dock clean and kept is an unsung hero of safe operation. There’s often a lot of traffic and movement on a loading dock so the area should be kept free of debris, hygienic and clean. If you deal with hazardous or other potentially risky material, it’s even more important you have a good cleaning and maintenance structure in place.
Training
Employee training is absolutely vital for ensuring everyone knows how to safely operate the various equipment on a loading dock and conduct themselves in a safe manner. From operating machinery to understanding vehicle capabilities, and from ergonomic lifting and carrying to wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, and even knowing the risk management and incident protocols and procedures, training isn’t a one-and-done thing. It’s an ongoing commitment to ensure your loading dock remains safe.
Engineering controls
Engineering controls are there to reduce risks and hazards. They can include something as simple as highly visible paint on areas that can prove hazardous, to elaborate electronic systems, automated machinery and the like.
Logistics
The more efficient your logistical plans the better your loading dock will operate. Of course, even the smoothest of facilities will find storage spaces full at some point and your loading dock will need to step up. However, having a robust logistical plan and operating procedure will not only ensure that your safety policies are adhered to but will also safeguard your assets from damage or loss. A strong loading dock safety plan and logistics plan go hand in hand.
Managing loading dock safety
Workplace health and safety is an ongoing work in progress and often managing it successfully requires double checking and ongoing development of your controls and procedures. The important thing to remember is that no matter how much time and energy you invest into the safety of your workers and worksite, it’s always worth it.
